Patriots place WR Welker on unable to perform list

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -The New England Patriots say they have placed wide receiver Wes Welker on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Welker, who has made a strong recovery from knee surgery in February, could come off the list at any time, the Patriots said Tuesday. New England begins training camp on Thursday.

Welker had surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on the Patriots' fourth offensive play of a 34-27 loss at Houston in the regular-season finale. He also damaged his medial collateral ligament, which didn't require surgery, on the play when he planted his left leg after making his NFL-leading 123rd catch of the season.

The Patriots also placed linebacker Shawn Crable and rookie defensive lineman Kade Weston on the same list.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East.
